‘ Fire & Bomb evacuation procedures are in place and regularly   practiced, however, I am not sure if they are robust enough for   the safe and dignified evacuation of disabled staff & visitors? ’

Health & Safety Manager

Observations

BS5588: Part 8: 1999  places a legal imperative to ensure that all buildings have in place Personal Emergency Evacuation Plans for disabled people (PEEP’s).

Disabled people as with all other people need to be safely and quickly evacuated from the building in the event of a fire or an emergancy, this is often overlooked when drawing up an evacuation plan or is bolted on without due consideration.

It is vital that systems are in place to identify people who may have a disability in order that Fire Wardens can do their job efficiently and effectively. PEEPs and what needs to be considered when evacuating disabled people needs to be effectively communicated and understood by everyone.

Considerations
  • Risk management of policy & procedures
  • Fire Wardens, Reception Staff, Security Guards are disabilty confident
  • Fire Wardens and Security Guards are disability confident
  • Disabled staff & visitors are identified
  • Evacuation signs and information are easy to see, read and understand
  • Customer handling and use of etiquette
  • When undertaking drills consider using mystery disabled people
